What Is a Flash Tattoo?
Flash refers to pre-designed artwork displayed in a tattoo shop, either on the walls, in binders, or posted online. Unlike custom tattoos where an artist draws something from scratch based on your ideas, flash designs are already finished and ready to tattoo. The concept goes back to the earliest days of American tattooing, when shops kept painted sheets of designs on display for clients to choose from.
At Enigma, the artists draw new flash regularly, so the selection rotates. If you see something you like, ask about availability.

How Flash Tattoos Work at Enigma
The process is simple. Walk in to our tattoo shop during business hours, browse the current flash selection, and let the front desk know which piece you want. An available artist will review placement and sizing with you, prep the stencil, and get started. Most flash tattoos are finished in a single session.
What to bring:
- Valid photo ID
- An idea of where you want the piece placed (your artist can help with this)
- Flexibility on timing (especially in you’re coming by on a weekend)
Weekdays are typically less busy. Weekends can fill up, so calling ahead to check availability is always a good move. Flash pieces are also available by appointment if you want to lock in a specific artist or time slot.
Why Get a Flash Tattoo?
Flash works well for a few different situations:
- You want something today. No design turnaround, no deposit wait. Flash is the fastest path from idea to ink.
- You trust the artist’s eye. Flash designs are drawn by the people who tattoo them. The composition, sizing, and color choices are already optimized for skin.
- You’re building a collection. Smaller flash pieces are a natural fit for filling gaps in a sleeve or adding standalone work between larger custom projects.
- It’s your first tattoo. Flash takes the pressure off the design process. You can see exactly what the finished piece will look like before committing.
- You want original art at a lower price point. Flash sessions are typically quicker than custom work, which means lower cost without sacrificing quality.
Flash Tattoo Events and Special Releases
Enigma runs flash-focused events throughout the year, including Friday the 13th tattoo specials with exclusive designs drawn specifically for the day. These events are walk-in only, first-come first-served, and tend to draw a crowd early. Check the Enigma events page or follow on social media for announcements on upcoming flash days, themed releases, and seasonal collections.
Outside of events, artists occasionally drop new flash sheets on their own schedules. If a specific tattoo artist’s style catches your eye, check their portfolio and social pages for their latest available work.

Flash Tattoo FAQs
How much do flash tattoos cost?
Pricing varies by design, size, and session length. Your artist will quote you before any work begins, so there are no surprises. Every flash piece gets the same sterile setup, single-use needles, and attention to detail as a fully custom session.
Can I modify a flash design?
Minor tweaks are usually fine. Changing a color, adjusting scale, or swapping a small detail is something most artists are happy to do. If the changes are significant enough to become a new design, that moves into custom territory with a different process and timeline.
Is flash tattoo quality lower than custom work?
No. Flash designs are created by professional tattoo artists who draw them specifically to work well as tattoos. The line weights, color choices, and compositions are all built with skin in mind. The only difference is that the design already exists when you walk in.
Do I need an appointment for flash?
Not usually. Most flash is available on a walk-in basis during regular hours. If you want a specific artist or a specific piece you’ve seen online, booking ahead guarantees both.
What styles of flash do you have?
It depends on who’s drawing. Enigma’s artists work across a range of styles, so the flash selection at any given time might include American traditional, fine line, blackwork, illustrative, and more. The collection changes regularly.
Where are you located?
We are located at 6635 Delmar Boulevard in University City (heart of the Delmar Loop) with free parking behind the building.
Get a Flash Tattoo at Enigma
The flash wall at Enigma isn’t a dusty collection of leftovers. It’s a rotating gallery of original work from artists who actually want to tattoo those designs. Every piece on the wall is there because someone put real thought into it.
That’s the difference between a shop that treats flash as an afterthought and one where the artists stay excited about the work. Stop by our Delmar Loop tattoo shop, browse what’s up, and walk out with something you didn’t plan on but couldn’t pass up.
You don’t need an elaborate plan to get a great tattoo.
Sometimes you just need to show up.
