Celtic Symbol Tattoo Style Guide

Long before tattoo machines existed, Celtic artisans were carving these same interlocking patterns into stone crosses, illuminated manuscripts, and metalwork across Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The knotwork in the Book of Kells is over a thousand years old, and it still reads as unmistakably modern on skin today.

The core of the style is the knot — a single continuous line that loops back on itself with no beginning or end, usually read as a symbol of eternity or interconnected life. From there, a few recurring motifs show up again and again: the triquetra (a three-pointed knot, sometimes called the trinity knot), the triple spiral, and Celtic crosses that blend the knotwork with a more traditional cross shape. Zoomorphic knotwork — animals whose bodies twist into the interlacing pattern — is its own whole sub-category, and some of the most striking pieces we’ve done.

Here’s the part that matters most for how this actually looks in ten years: knotwork lives or dies on precision. Every line has to stay exactly the same width and exactly evenly spaced, or the illusion of continuous interlacing breaks and the whole piece reads as messy instead of clean. This is one of the least forgiving styles for shaky linework, which is exactly why it’s worth bringing to an artist who does it regularly rather than as a one-off.

Because the patterns are inherently linear and flowing, they wrap exceptionally well around natural curves — forearms, calves, and the spine are all strong candidates for a design that follows the body rather than just sitting on it.

Interested in Celtic work? Bring reference images of the specific knot styles or crosses you’re drawn to — there’s real variation between an early medieval interlace pattern and a more modern Celtic-inspired design, and it helps to know which direction you want before your consultation.
